Sacred Hoop - Retired

I can remember having copied this extended EP or album, no matter how you want to call it with its 8 tracks, from a friend from vinyl back in the day. And not long ago I was able to grab the CD and can now provide it to you. There are still copies left for sale on various platforms and I'll recommend to grab one copy, too. It's definitely a must have if you are a fan of bay-area related underground stuff.
Sacred Hoop consists of rapper Luke Sick, producer Vrse Murphy and the DJ Fondouglas who is replaced on later releases by DJ Marz. The same group organization with one MC, one producer and one DJ you can also find in the groups Third Sight and Glue to name two examples.
And what a surprise, Jihad of Third Sight appears on this album! DJ Quest and Eddie K of the Space Travelers also do.

Marcy All Star$

The Prizum again....but having an interesting record here. Especially the track Crabb Niggaz that appears in two different versions on this record. One that has the same beat as the one on the "Hot Time" record from Polo and Zoundwavez aka Phoenix Orion but where only Phoenix Orion and the B.O.D. Click ( Clutch and Money Bazz) appear on. Be sure to check the other record to see the difference. The 2nd version of Crabb Niggaz is only performed by the B.O.D. Click and has a different beat that owns more of that East Coast flavour. The track "Alert The Masses" has a really tight beat and I'm a bit sad that there is no instro of it on this record. For "Ray Day" applies the same while there is also a instrumental of "I'll Get Ill" on this record that features Mr Jig. Never heard of Mr Jig before but he raps that he is also from the B.O.D. Click.

Widow P - No Champagne Just Blunts n Heineken

This is Nr 3 in the round from the Prizum offering two different tracks "No Champagne" and "Pass It Around" plus their instrumentals. The Acapella of "No Champagne" is also included. Both tracks have very tight beats and the Prizum's raps are cool, too.

Widow Prizum - Jetlag

As the cover implies, this release builds a bridge between New York and Paris.
Widow Prizum ( Cozmic Ray and Ikeia ) from NY and Assassin ( Pyroman and Rockin' Squat ) from Paris join forces on the track "Jetlag". "Scared Of Us" is brought to you by the Prizum feturing Zoundwavez aka Phoenix Orion. Last but not least Cozmic Ray and Ikeia appear on "543-21". The Acapella of Jetlag is included plus its instrumental and the instrumental of 543-21.

Eligh - A Story Of 2 Worlds

Just heard the new album of Eligh and I thought that I upload this fine release. It is Eligh's second album and he released it on Tape and on CD in 1997. Production is mostly handled by Eligh himself plus Elusive, Grouch and by Bizarro aka Bicasso on a very nice track called Plantlife were Bizarro also kicks some verses. Features also come from Scarub, Murs, Basik, PSC, BFAP, ASOP and Grouch.
I can remember a record store were this CD laid for some years. Everytime I went through the CDs, I thought: "Hmm, I'm not sure. Should I buy it or not?". But in the end I bought it and it was a good decision, it took long but I made it. When I hear "Fisherman's Lot" it comes to my mind and I'm feeling good. Or Congestion, or...

Supherb - All Bullshit Aside EP

From Wild West Recordings comes this fine 11 track EP. Wild West Recordings is a subsidiary of American Recordings which was founded by Rick Rubin who also founded Def Jam Recordings and was responsible for some very successful productions. The Nonce who also had some releases on Wild West Recordings produced the tracks "Born On Parole Remix" and "Mr. Hollywood" on this EP. "All Bullshit Aside" and "Any Formz Of Wackness" were produced by A.M. and I can only say that I don't have a clue who that is. The EP only consists of this 4 tracks in their clean, instrumental and with one exception their album versions.
"All Bullshit Aside" has a laid back break-beat with a nice trumpet sample and features Chino XL on the hook while the beat of "Any Formz Of Wackness" adds some tempo and features Real Thorough on the hooks. As you can imagine its about the non-tolerance of wack mcs. "Born On Parole Remix" also features Real Thorough but has a typical laid back Nonce beat while "Mr. Hollywood" has a hard pumping bass which again fits good to the aggressive theme of the track.
I recorded it today from vinyl and did some stuff to make it sound more clean. Hope you enjoy.

Abstract Tribe Unique's Golden Quartette

As I mentioned before, in 1995 Abstract Rude was close to a record deal at Grand Royal home of the Beastie Boys. The album Mood Pieces was meant to be released there but only two tracks made it onto a compilation from the label. Behind the scenery there exist two records which have never been released, one only made it to the test pressing status, while the other probably went for promo status, but I'm not sure if it really is a promo record or just a test pressing, too. What I'm talking about is the "Blast Off Into Infinity (12" Test Pressing)" and the "Ohh I'm a Getcha (12" Promo)".
What I think is, that Mike D visited a Good Life session where he probably was impressed by a performance of Abstract Rude & the Tribe Unique and asked them for a demo tape. In his raps, Abstract Rude mentions "I handed a tape to Mike D from Grand Royal" multiple times and also "MC A plays the bass on OG Crew" which might be a hint for a different unreleased version of the "Heavyweights Round III" track, probably the one that was deleted on utube. Also a rough version of "Blast Off Into Infinity" was deleted!
The Blast Off Into Infinity record has stamped in the date NOV 17, 1995 while there isn't no direct clue on the "Ohh, I'm A Getcha" record when it was pressed except that it contains the hint, that it was mastered at Capitul Recordings. But I think that through Aceys deal with Capitul, Abstract gained access to the golden chambers and for that reason, I will definitely date it to '95.
In '97 ATU had a deal with the crown loyal label Big Dada, which resulted in another 12" with two tracks from the Mood Pieces album and later on in '98 followed a 12" on Deemo Records containing the track "Caught Up In the Rappcha" together with a track from Syndrome on the flip-side.
I think that these records give a good hint, how many obstacles upcoming artists have to pass and I don't want to know, how many patience was put into the "Mood Pieces" album through the years before it was finally self-released by ATU. Although I'm not a 100% familiar with all the background info, I think that the given hints paint a good picture of what was happened and I'm glad, that beside a ton of unreleased underground stuff, "Mood Pieces" was finally released in '98! A record that captured me from the first time I heard it and may never let me go...

Polo & Zoundwavez - Hot Time

I'm sorry for the bad rip but my records condition is very bad. Something like this can happen, when you buy an used record. What I'm very curious about is the version called "Hot Time(Crab Niggaz Freestyle)" on this record because there is a Widow Prizum/B.O.D. Click record that contains the track "Crab Niggaz" and "Crab Niggaz Freestyle". I know that the track "Crab Niggaz" is different from the track on the Hot Time record but I'm curious about the other track!

But this record was recorded in France and it is also a french release and on the back side cover are the following record labels stated: Hostile Records, Funk La Planet, Psycho V, Delabels, Virgin France.
The producer is DJ Wick who also produced some tracks for Widow Prizum and there appear Polo and Legacy from France, Zoundwavez aka Phoenix Orion, Cosmic Ray, Margie and Natalie Wallace from Alien Nation and Clutch and Money Bazz from the B.O.D. Click.
What I forgot to say is, that the beat of "Hot Time" reminds me of a track from Fat Jacks "Cater To The DJ" compilation.

Amón Tóbin

As far as Discogs says is this the first solo album of the brazilian born electro producer Amón Tóbin.
My opinion on this record is, that it is by far his best for now.
On Discogs it is catogorized as Drum n Bass, Breaks and Downtempo but I think that it also contains more genres like Acid Jazz and Trip Hop.
One thing that I very like on this one, is the combination of Samba and Drum n Bass music, which is a very hard hitting combination.
But Amón Tóbin took good care of the listener by carefully compiling the tracklist.
As mentioned before, he has some hard Drum n Bass tracks on it but he didn't organize them one after another but put trippy Downtempo tracks in between to give the listener the chance to rest for a bit.
This is really necessary because some tracks have complex soundscapes which are worth listening to!

The Phoenix has risen

On Philaflava AlienNationRadio posted up a list of all the stuff that Phoenix Orion made. In this list is release that is called Funk La Planet and dated to 1993, can it be that this one was recorded in 1993 and not around 1997?

Having a chat with Al 'T' who produced this one together with Jay Rodriguez it can be possible but it's not sure! What he told me is that Benjamin Deffe who runs the label Funk La Planet didn't pay Al T for his work and studio time and he didn't credited Al T's & Jay Rodriguez work correctly, he didn't even mention their Publisher on the record!
To come back to the  recording, 1993 could be possible, in 1994 the Millenium album was recorded by Al T and there was also a release from Groove Collective with a feature of...Phoenix Orion! And guess who a member of the Groove Collective is? Yeah, Jay Rodriguez.

Underground Fossils

To come closer to the complete discography of ATU, I'll go back in time exactly to 1997 when this album was released. I have no clue if the tracks of this one were produced before or after the Mood Pieces album but as mentioned on the Mood Pieces post, there were two records released in 1995 on Grand Royal and one in 1997 on Big Dada containing tracks from the Mood Pieces album. The Underground Fossils album was first released on Vinyl and on tape and later on CD in 2002.  This one contains female and male background vocals like the Mood Pieces album, also from Ebony Prince. As I'm listening to it now on "Yesterday and today" I heard Abstract Rude calling out the name of Ebony Prince at around 4:12. He must have been an old member of the Tribe Unique but I think that he hasn't been on Tribe's releases since South Central Thynk Taynk. Probably he was a dancer and not on the backing vocals ordinarily.
As mentioned before I can't surely say when it was recorded but what I think is that this one and the Mood Pieces were ATU's early productions. Both sound very similar while South Central Thynk Taynk has a different sound. On the two first mentioned ones Fat Jack uses his rough snares which are typical for him. They are like the high-pitched sound of two sharp blade edges grinding on each others. He uses this type of snare and variants of it very often.
